Many Europeans believe that the European welfare state model is that of the United States consider – and see this as the reason for the relative success in dealing with the pandemic. But it’s not that simple.
Unemployment in the USA rose again, after many States had taken the restrictions of the public life back and it came to more Covid-19-infections. The U.S. policy fight over whether unemployment benefits are still generous, or back to American normal level cuts are to be made, which would hit poorer Americans hard. In Europe, the infections are also on the increase, but starting from a much lower base, and many workers continue to be protected by short-time working and other measures.
