In a dynamic convergence of space experts and enthusiasts, a pivotal workshop titled “Space Technologies for Social and Economic Benefits” has embarked on its journey in Baku. This transformative event, jointly organized by Azercosmos, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), and the International Astronautical Federation, marks a significant milestone within the framework of the 74th International Astronautical Congress (IAC).

Addressing the workshop’s esteemed attendees, Aarti Holla-Maini, the Director of UNOOSA, articulated the workshop’s core objective. She emphasized the imperative need to strengthen the ties between education, innovation, and technology while exploring multifaceted partnership opportunities in this realm. “Our mission is to create a comprehensive space partnership framework, uniting the public, private, and non-governmental sectors, with a particular emphasis on the emerging space nations,” she declared.

Aarti Holla-Maini went on to underscore the aspiration of leveraging space endeavors to attain environmental, scientific, and technological advantages that can be shared globally. “Access to the benefits generated by space activities should be accessible to all,” she proclaimed, reaffirming UNOOSA’s steadfast commitment to knowledge sharing and cooperation.

Clay Mowry, the President of the International Astronautical Federation, extended his gratitude to Azerbaijan for its role in hosting the 74th International Astronautical Congress. He hailed the event as a momentous platform for deliberations on sustainable development, not only at a global level but also within the regional context. Mowry underscored the urgency of international collaboration and knowledge exchange to pave the way for a more sustainable future.

The challenge of enabling all stakeholders to harness space in a sustainable manner is indeed formidable, and Mowry emphasized the importance of attracting both public and private investments to address this challenge effectively. “The partnership between public and private sectors is instrumental in advancing space exploration and utilization,” he asserted.

Samaddin Asadov, the Chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan’s Space Agency Azercosmos, delivered insightful remarks that resonated with the workshop’s theme. He highlighted the potential for this workshop to generate novel ideas not only for Azerbaijan but for all participants involved. In 2013, Azerbaijan proudly became a member of the exclusive club of space-faring nations, marking a significant milestone in its journey into the cosmos.

Asadov underscored Azerbaijan’s dedication to fostering regional and international cooperation in space-related endeavors. The concept of sustainability in space activities, he noted, is of paramount importance. To that end, Azerbaijan remains committed to providing unwavering support to the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs. Notably, the implementation of the “Law on Space” activities, duly approved by the government, has opened up extensive avenues for investment in the field of space activities within Azerbaijan.and advancing sustainable space exploration. The transformative potential of space technologies continues to shape the global landscape, and events like this workshop are instrumental in unlocking that potential for the greater good.
