Aptos Network and its CEO, Mo Shaikh, fell victim to a cyber assault when malicious actors compromised their Twitter accounts on July 7th. The hackers, exploiting the vast reach of social media, disseminated falsified information concerning an airdrop—an apparent ruse to engage unsuspecting users. Multichain experienced a very different and costly hiccup, marking a hard day for the altcoin and DeFi industry.
The infiltrators cunningly propagated an enticing bait – a deceptive airdrop announcement, compelling the audience to engage with a phishing link that could compromise their security. The cryptic tweet solicited user participation, alluring them with promises of complimentary APT, the network’s digital currency. It also dramatically overstated that over $1 million had been successfully claimed already, further amplifying its clickbait appeal.
To escalate the intrigue, the hackers insinuated, via the compromised CEO’s account, that APT was poised to outperform all competing cryptocurrencies.
In response, Aptos Labs swiftly alerted the community, clarifying via a tweet that their account had been compromised and debunking the alleged APT airdrop as an outright scam. This security breach underscores the increasing reliance of bad actors on social media platforms as conduits to mislead and manipulate users.
Regrettably, this is far from an isolated incident in the crypto realm. The same day witnessed another significant breach. The Fantom bridge of Multichain, a multi-faceted platform serving as a hub for blockchain transactions, was subjected to an audacious heist that drained its assets.
Impacted assets included WBTC, USDC, DAI, wETH, and Link. The total haul from the theft amounted to a staggering $126 million, with WBTC, wETH, and USDC accounting for $30.9 million, $13.6 million, and $57 million, respectively.
Following the incident, Multichain issued a cautionary announcement, stating that the assets were anomalously relocated to an unknown address. It strongly advised users to suspend Multichain services and retract all contract approvals until further notice. Simultaneously, Fantom Foundation’s CEO, Michael Kong, assured that he was actively investigating the issue.
This incident exacerbates existing challenges for Multichain. Not only has the platform’s value seen a downturn amidst circulating arrest rumors, but Binance, the leading cryptocurrency exchange platform, has also halted support for eight Multichain bridge tokens. This suspension has sparked heated debates regarding the protocol’s cross-chain operations.
These incidents offer a sobering reminder of the growing vulnerability of digital platforms and the ever-increasing sophistication of cybercriminals. As crypto platforms navigate these turbulent times, it is clear that enhanced cybersecurity measures must become an integral component of their operational strategy.
