The elections of the U.S. in the figures

The election race of the united States has precedents and established records in various matters, in particular with regard to early voting and campaign spending.

Here are some numbers related to the elections.

3

November 3: date of the presidential election, renewal of the Congress and various state and local office. The voting takes place on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

10

The presidential election will mainly depend on the result in 10 key states, and that they tend to change their political preferences from one election to another.

Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida, Iowa and Ohio were crucial in the victory of Donald Trump in the elections of 2016.

And polls show that the democrat Joe Biden could on this occasion take the republicans their dominance in Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina, and Texas.

35 + 435

In addition to voting for president, americans will elect the members of the 117th legislature. Put in game 35 Senate seats and all 435 seats of the House of Representatives.

The democrats hold now the majority in the Lower House, and the forecasts suggest that they will not lose that advantage.

If Biden arrives at the White House and the democrats take control of the Senate, currently in the hands of the republicans, the party will have control over the main pillars of federal power for the first time since the arrival of Barack Obama to power.

270

The elections in the united States are indirect, and it is the Electoral College who ultimately votes for the president.

In effect, americans vote to the 538 members of that body. To get to the White House, a candidate must get at least 270 votes in the College.

The number of electors each state has in the College depends on its number of representatives in the Lower House, a figure based on the population of each entity, plus the two senators that each demarcation.

230 million

Approximately 230 million americans are eligible to vote, although a good part of them do not go to the polls, because voting is not compulsory.

However, the elections of 2020 could have a record participation.

Early voting has already exceeded all expectations, with many voters who chose to do so before the day of elections to avoid crowds in the midst of the pandemic of coronavirus.

Until Friday, almost 84 million voters had voted early.

A total of 138 million americans voted in the elections of 2016.

6.600 million

Campaign spending broke all records in 2020, with 6.600 million between both candidates, 2,000 million more than in 2016, when Trump was faced with Hillary Clinton, according to a study by the Center for Responsive Politics.

The campaign, Biden has flooded the radio stations in key states with election advertising.

In total, we spent more than 14,000 million in the run up to the election, of which more than 7,000 million was allocated to the liza legislative.
