SMEs Leading the Charge in Experiential Workspaces

London, United Kingdom, 7th Sep 2022, As the working world begins a slow but steady march back towards normalcy, organisations are now faced with an undeniable challenge of luring workers back into the office environment.

A few years ago, the idea of working remotely or working from home seemed like a pipe dream of the highest order and in most cases, if employees were not in the office from 9-5, they essentially were not working hard enough. Then 2020 came and brought along with it the COVID-19 pandemic and suddenly, the idea of traditional office environments was completely disrupted.

Now as a semblance of normality begins to return, organisations are faced with the task of convincing employees to relinquish their ‘work-from-home’ freedom to come back to the office. This is certainly a daunting task and Larry Fink, CEO of Blackrock, positions it best in his 2022 “Letter to CEOs”, where he states that no relationship has been changed more by the pandemic than the one between employers and employees. According to Fink, employees across the globe are looking for more from their employer, including more flexibility and more meaningful work.

This change in dynamic is the result of the extended period of remote working, which gave people the opportunity to evaluate their lives and options and then realise that they could control their own work/life balance and remain productive without having to be in an office.

So, the question for many employers facing this new dynamic is how do they draw workers back into the office environment? For some companies, the answer lies in creating more engaging work environments and one business leading the charge is Acacia Training. A subsidiary of the MBH Group, Acacia worked with fellow MBH Group companies Gaysha and GS Contracts to develop an innovative conceptual design that served various working styles.

“We wanted to ensure that anyone who comes to Acacia Training feels welcome,” says Victoria Sylvester, CEO, Acacia training. “They’ve got a great environment and different workspaces to be able to be the wonderful, creative people that they are.

Divided into four color coded areas, every section of Acacia’s revamped office is designed for hot desking and was intended to not be owned by anyone and be completely free for use by everyone. “You can work individually, and collaboratively, in the same area,” states Ian Elsey, CEO of Gaysha. “You can go work in any area, on any day, in any part of the day should your mood change. How much joy would that create in a day?”

The design includes a more relaxed, serene space, an area for larger group gatherings and presentations, and an area that is more private for those who need a bit of solitude to focus on their projects.

What many organisations like Acacia Training are coming to realise is that when employees were working from home, they had all the things they needed to unwind and activate a proper work/life balance, which in turn, unlocked a lot of creativity. Now they need to make sure these things exist in the office as well.

“Fun is part of work. If work is more fun, we get more energy, we get more creative juices going and that’s a huge part of what we are here,” states Sylvester. “The design here has exceeded our expectations, the place is absolutely wonderful, and the team love it. I can’t tell you how much they are looking forward to being back in and working together again.”

Callum Laing, CEO, MBH Corporation plc said, “Small businesses are often the first to innovate when it comes to working with their teams.  Unencumbered by lengthy HR policies and competing department politics, business owners have the freedom to change office environments, or working hours to get the best results from their team.  Consequently there is often a lot of loyalty that is impossible to recreate in big companies.  A happy team is a huge strategic advantage in business!’
