The number of small home-based businesses has literally skyrocketed in the past few years which can only partially be the result of Covid-19. When workers got a taste of working from home during shutdowns, many decided it was easier and more lucrative all the way around. However, some employers wouldn’t continue offering remote work or flex hours.
Then there are those business professionals who have risen as far as they can within the corporate ranks and are now branching out on their own. Others need the extra income due to a struggling economy and inflation. No matter what the reason for starting a home-based business, the fact remains that every business needs an ‘office’ and that, in turn, necessitates equipment. Here is the most important office equipment every home-based business needs.
A desktop PC is going to be the hub around which all your business operations are handled. From marketing to communication and everything in between, you will absolutely need a PC. If at all possible, get a high-quality computer with a fast CPU and plenty of storage and RAM. You will also want an HD monitor and a wireless router. Don’t forget to make sure your computer has Bluetooth technology so that you can connect to things like your cellphone to upload or download files if necessary.
When it comes to business printers, your best option is to get a multifunction printer that also scans, copies and faxes when necessary. Find one with wireless connectivity and you will have the best printer on the market for all your business needs. Even though the world has gone digital, sometimes hardcopies are necessary by law such as when they must be notarized. An all-in-one multifunction is by far the best option. Why have several pieces of equipment when one will suffice?
A telephone is also a necessity. Whether you want a Ma Belle hardwired phone, a mobile phone or a VoIP phone through your computer, there will be times when you need to communicate by phone. Even if you do a lot of videoconferencing, that will never take the place of those short calls that come in daily. Imagine how difficult it would be to offer customer service for your customers if the only way they could connect was via a chat bot or email.
Unless you want to set your office up on the dining room table, you will need a good quality ergonomic desk and chair. You may be sitting for several hours each day, so take time to ensure comfort as well as style.
These are the most important pieces of office equipment you will need, at least to start with, but don’t forget that you’ll also need a filing cabinet and a paper shredder for those documents you need to keep on record or shred so private information is preserved. You’ll also need those ordinary items like staplers, staples, staple remover, file folders, pens, pencils, whiteout, and so much more. But if you have the right equipment, those little items can wait a bit more.
