Writing Sports, 3 jun (EFE).- A new idea arises for the dispute of the U.s. Open this year may be a reality, and this would be for the Cincinnati tournament, traditional Masters 1000 before the New York play just before this Grand Slam and in the same city of the skyscrapers.
This proposal would have been moved by the Tennis Federation of the USA (USTA) to the ATP and the WTA, and the information the advances to the newspaper the New York Times. So they meet during a great period of time to all the participants in both tournaments in the same city, avoiding travel and risk of infection by the pandemic of the coronavirus and the USTA would save two of its jewels to the calendar of a stroke.
In this way, the Western & Southern Open is would dispute the 17th to the 23rd of August and the U.s. Open, from August 24 to September 13, in a row, and without displacement.
The idea came shortly after the USTA announced a series of measures to facilitate the dispute of the ‘major’ american’. Between them, provide indications to the players who come from areas considered at risk in Europe (Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt), South America (Buenos Aires) and Asia (Dubai). Tests before boarding the plane, and have tests that are negative of the Covid-19.
Then, once in place, there would be a follow-up journal: health questionnaire to fill in, temperature controls, testing, nasal, saliva, and antibodies. To all these precautions added to the charter flights, children and adults, and the most controversial: without spectators in the stands.
“That is one of the options that are being considered”, said Stacey Allaster, chief executive of professional tennis for the USTA, about the presence of fans.
There are “increasingly less likely” that the spectators attending the event this year, added the chief financial officer of the USTA, Lew Sherr.
“That means giving up the sale of tickets, hospitality and some of the income from sponsorships,” said Sherr. “But the rights of television and digital, and the rest of the sponsors are large enough to make it worthwhile to play the US Open, behind closed doors,” he said.
To all this joins the question about what will happen to the tournaments before the U.s. Open, not resolved yet by the ATP, which should have already announced this calendar and it seems that has delayed the announcement, just to consolidate before the idea Cincinnati-New York, in the same city.
